"Attacks on the Legislature" was the headline Thursday morning on Brazilian newspaper O Globo after protesters calling for a military coup forced their way into Brazil's lower chamber of Congress.

The protestors in Brasilia, the country's capital, pushed passed security guards and smashed a glass door before entering into the parliament chamber, denouncing government corruption.

Also Wednesday, public sector workers in Rio de Janeiro protested against cuts, and police responded with tear gas.

A massive corruption scandal and the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff have diminished public confidence in the government. The protestors are calling for a return to military rule. The previous military regime, in power from 1964 to 1985, detained, tortured, and even killed its opponents, but oversaw rapid economic growth.
