Rio de Janeiro-based O Globo daily's front page offered a snapshot of the contrasts of today's Brazil. While top story reported on a troubling new unemployment trend, as an estimated 2.3 million of the country's jobless now take at least two years to find work, the newspaper also featured a centerpiece photograph of the flurry of confetti and smiling faces to mark the start of Carnaval celebrations.

Originally thought to have a potential for economic growth in, 2017 is not looking much better than last year for Brazil, which saw the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff and unemployment that reached a new high of 12%. Many analysts are adjusting their initial projections for yearly growth in Brazil, lowering the rate to almost zero.

The newspaper reports on the new numbers that the time needed to find work is increasing for the jobless population, with 2.3 million people, or 20%, struggling with long periods of unemployment. Still, even in the face of the grim news, the annual Carnival celebrations began in Rio without missing a beat. Música!
